Background
Every Child By Two (ECBT) was founded in 1991 by Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter and Former First Lady of Arkansas Betty Bumpers as a response to the U.S. measles epidemic which sickened 55,622 Americans, hospitalized over 11,000 and killed more than 120 people, many of them young children. Today, ECBT strives to increase awareness of the need for timely immunizations, increase the public's understanding of vaccine safety, ensure that all families have access to life-saving vaccines, and encourage pro-vaccine legislation.

Challenge
For nearly 25 years, ECBT has delivered impactful and broad-reaching advocacy and public education campaigns. Their lean operations have hindered the organization’s ability to grow a stable stream of financial resources. ECBT needed to establish a development program to ensure its sustainability.

Solution
Windmill Hill Consulting (WHC) conducted an assessment through key stakeholder interviews and review of materials to determine the best recommendations for creating a stronger culture of philanthropy within ECBT. WHC helped ECBT define its case for support; developed a strategy for growing and diversifying its donors; and created a list of immediate and long-term prospects to begin to cultivate and solicit. In addition, WHC provided training and support of ECBT’s staff and Board leadership to encourage more strategic involvement in donor-centered fundraising while also suggesting a staffing solution that would help them grow their donor base over the long-term.

Results
As a result of this collaboration, ECBT is better prepared to look ahead to its next 25 years with a clearer sense of how to position its work and funding opportunities to potential donors, and create the right staffing structure and Board engagement needed to sustain and grow its donor outreach.

Background
Launched in 2011, The Center for Disaster Philanthropy's mission is to transform disaster giving by providing timely and thoughtful strategies to increase donors’ impact during domestic and international disasters. The Center provides a platform of learning and connection with leading disaster experts and other disaster philanthropists that brings more private money to disaster response efforts. Starting with just a few seed gifts CDP was able to grow from its incubation in 2010 to an official launch in 2011.

Challenge
Given the newness of CDP in an already-crowded landscape of other disaster management organizations, they had to create and market a very unique value proposition that could capture the attention of disaster donors before, during, and after disasters.

Solution
Windmill Hill Consulting (WHC) provided outsourced development support and WHC’s Barbara O’Reilly served as the inaugural Development Director for CDP.  Barbara brought her strong background in disaster fundraising and a keen understanding of how to educate donors about the gaps in disaster philanthropy.  WHC led CDP in all its Development processes and systems; created a suite of donor materials and messaging; conducted prospect research and initial outreach to potential donors; helped steward current founding donors and solicited $400,000 in new gift requests; and staffed the CEO, Vice President, and Board Share.

Results
WHC helped grow revenue from $100,000 in FY11 to $500,000 in FY13 and put in place a strong Development structure and approach to engaging donors which has enabled CDP to continue to build its donor base and increase its visibility after its launch. The organization was named one of five “nonprofit highpoints of 2012” by The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Background
The Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program (NVTRP) is a nonprofit providing equine assisted activities for children and adults with disabilities, youth-at-risk, recovering military service personnel, and their families in an inclusive, community setting. For most of its existence, NVTRP had been using donated space at different public stables which caused inconsistency and distractions for the organization’s clients.

Challenge
NVTRP had an opportunity to purchase a permanent home for its programs and establish the NVTRP Center of Excellence that would offer clients expanded opportunities to work with physical and occupational therapists and speech pathologists, access to a motor sensory room, art and music therapy, and a space for clients and their families to form support networks. NVTRP planned to launch a $3 million campaign to raise the seed money for their plans. Up to this point, NVTRP had relied on a small annual fundraising program that covered only the general operations for the organization, but needed to create a strong campaign infrastructure to launch this ambitious fundraising effort.

Solution
Windmill Hill Consulting (WHC) first assisted NVTRP with their campaign planning by crafting their case statement, gift pyramid, campaign volunteer structure, job descriptions, and training materials as well as prioritizing, qualifying, and adding to their prospect pipeline. WHC also worked with NVTRP staff and Board leadership on initial prospect outreach and supported donor cultivation activities of the Executive Director and Board Chair.

Results
The momentum of the campaign began to build with the collaboration with WHC. NVTRP’s staff and board leadership were now prepared to embark on the next phase of this ambitious campaign; they now had a plan in place thanks to the groundwork laid by WHC. The “Raise the Barn” campaign as of October 1, 2015 is halfway to its financial goal having already raised $1,500,000.

Background
Refugees International (RI) advocates for lifesaving assistance and protection for displaced people and promotes solutions to displacement crises. Founded in 1979, RI has become a leading advocacy organization that promotes action from global leaders to address refugee crises around the world.

Challenge
RI Development leadership was in a transition in 2013 and needed strategic guidance during this shift so they could sustain their fundraising efforts while looking to diversify their development programs.

Solution
Windmill Hill Consulting (WHC) helped conduct an initial development assessment to identify areas of strength and opportunities, provided coaching and technical skills-building for the new RI leadership and staff, and advised on foundation strategies and their year-end fundraising plans. Following this collaboration, WHC was retained for an additional year to provide counsel to RI on their institutional foundation relations, on how to grow their individual giving program through the creation of new leadership giving circles, and on research for the piloting of a Corporate Cabinet.

Results
The recommendations and hands-on implementation support WHC offered helped RI’s new Vice President of Philanthropy transition into her leadership role and adopt the recommendations on how to build, maintain, and diversify their revenue streams.

Barbara is organized, thorough, and very astute yet with a good sense of humor. She is not thwarted by big challenges and always suggests alternative approaches so that every angle is tried. She is also focused on data and transparency so we could make solid decisions on where to focus the campaign when we hit some road blocks.
